Injections for Dupuytren's disease

What is Dupuytren’s disease?

Dupuytren’s disease is a common disorder that occurs in the hand. It is a condition, which causes the fascia (thick bands under the skin) of the hand to tighten and contract. Currently, there is no definitive understanding of the cause of Dupuytren’s although there is thought to be some genetic link as well as a link to other conditions or previous trauma.

What can I do about my Dupuytren’s disease?

There is no cure for Dupuytren’s but there are two types of treatments available, which can help restore the function and range of movement to the hand. An exciting new non-surgical treatment of contractures caused by Dupuytren’s disease is now available for both insured and self-pay patients in BMI Hospitals. There are also multiple surgical solutions available.

What is Collagenase?

Collagenase clostridium histolyticum is a medicine for the treatment of palpable bands caused by Dupuytren’s disease. It provides a non-surgical, outpatient based intervention for this disorder.

If you have fingers (or a thumb) contracting in towards the palm you will know how frustrating and interfering this can be to daily activity.Collagenase is injected into the diseased tissue by a Consultant Hand Surgeon specially trained to use this product.

You then return home with an elevated hand for 24 hours and then upon return to see the consultant, they will manipulate the fingers into extension under a local anaesthetic. The medication works by breaking down the diseased bands in the hand. After the injection, you may have swelling and bruising for a short time. Hand Therapy is recommended post procedure.

Who can have this treatment?

When you see the Hand Surgeon initially, they will assess your suitability for this procedure and will tell you about your treatment options. If you choose to have Collagenase treatment, we will help you understand the process, the potential side effects and the follow up care required.

Paying for your operation

The cost of injections of Collagenase for Dupuytren’s disease is covered by most medical insurance policies, but please check with your insurer first. If you are paying for your own treatment, the cost of the operation will be explained and confirmed in writing when you book the operation.

You will receive a quote beforehand, and this will include the surgeon’s fee and the hospital charge for your procedure.
