What is hepatology?
Hepatology includes the study of liver, gallbladder, biliary tree and pancreas as well as management of their disorders. The doctors who specialise in this area are called hepatologists.
Hepatologists are frequently asked to investigate for a cause of abnormal liver function blood tests, even when symptoms are absent. They are supported by an increasing range of diagnostic tests and treatment options. The latest diagnostic tests include an endoscopic ultrasound obtaining superior images of biliary tree and pancreas and a liver fibroscan (avoiding the need for liver biopsy). There are effective (and new emerging) anti-viral medications available for chronic hepatitis B and C. The management of alcoholic liver disease requires multi-disciplinary specialist input and long term support.
A consultation at BMI hospitals assures you of a professional and discrete assessment of all liver conditions.
When you should see a hepatologist?
Some of the most common conditions that hepatologists diagnose, treat and manage are:
- Alcohol related liver diseases, such as cirrhosis, liver cancer and fatty liver disease
- Viral hepatitis infections (A, B, C, E)
- Drug overdose
- Genetic and metabolic liver diseases
- Damage to the pancreas or biliary tract
- Portal hypertension
Common treatments and tests
Liver disorders are usually diagnosed through liver function blood tests or using imaging methods such as ultrasound or CT scans. Sometimes, a biopsy will be necessary for an underlying diagnosis.
Treating liver diseases depends on the condition and its severity, but multiple diseases can be treated with medication or minimally invasive procedures. Surgery can be recommended to more severe cases.
