Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

Hyperhidrosis is a common condition which sees excessive sweating that can occur throughout the body.

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition which causes excessive sweating.

Excessive sweating is a normal response to increased body temperature. However in some cases sweating, particularly under the arms (although it can effect other parts of the body), can become excessive and potentially troublesome, even if the person is not particularly hot: this is known as hyperhidrosis. That is when it may become an embarrassing problem and an effective treatment is necessary.

Hyperhidrosis treatment

First line treatments include topical preparations such as roll-on deodorants. Some of these are irritant to the skin and therefore difficult to use regularly.

An alternative approach is to use injected treatments if clinically indicated. Excessive under-arm sweating may be treated by administering an injection to the overactive sweat glands. The injected treatment acts by temporarily blocking excess nerve signals to the sweat glands thus reducing the amount of sweat released.
