What are nerve conduction studies?
This test is used to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome alongside clinical examination. The nerve conduction studies are done by a specially trained hand therapist or physiotherapist.
How does it work?
Nerve conduction studies work by applying an electrode to the hand and wrist. An electrical current is sent through the electrode and the machine detects the ability of the nerve to conduct the impulses sent. This builds a picture of how effective your nerve is at transferring information. It’s compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel of the wrist that causes carpal tunnel syndrome.
Would I benefit from having a nerve conduction study?
If your clinician believes you might be suffering with carpal tunnel syndrome, this test will help with your diagnosis and particularly helps to determine the extent of the damage to the nerve. Your therapist or consultant can then discuss with you the best course of treatment which may be having some therapy, an injection or surgery.
How much does a nerve conduction study cost?
Before having a nerve conduction test an initial assessment with a physiotherapist at BMI Healthcare is required the cost of this starts from £54*. After this initial assessment the physiotherapist or hand therapist can advise if you require a nerve conduction test. Prices vary per site and your physiotherapist will advise if nerve conduction is appropriate and explain any further costs involved.
