What is Neuropsychology?

Neuropsychology is a specialised field in neuroscience that looks at diagnosing changes in human behaviour and cognitive functioning, often after some sort of physical damage to the brain. It is therefore an intersection between psychology and clinical neurology.

Neuropsychologists’ main activity is to assess how the brain is functioning by observing behaviours and trying to help patients in cases of head injury, stroke, disorders that affect the brain, etc.

Outside of clinical treatment, neuropsychologists may also be active in diagnosing behavioural changes in people for court cases, giving insight into hard-wired psychological responses for product design, studying healthy patients’ responses to stimuli, or working on new clinical treatments for disorders.

When you should see a neuropsychologist?

A consultant neuropsychologist can perform tests, diagnose or treat multiple conditions that affect the brain such as:

  • Alzheimer’s disease or other form of dementia
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Stroke
  • Brain tumours
  • Epilepsy

The neuropsychologist can also assess potential brain damage in case of a head injury, a history of alcohol or drug abuse, and exposure to toxic chemicals, poisons or pollution.

Treatments and tests

Neuropsychological tests are designed to examine a variety of cognitive abilities, including speed of information processing, attention, memory, language, and executive functions, which are necessary for goal-directed behaviour. By testing a range of cognitive abilities and examining patterns of performance in different cognitive areas, neuropsychologists can make inferences about underlying brain function.

The type of neurological treatment you will receive will depend on your symptoms. Your consultant will assess your condition and give you a specialist opinion. If further diagnostic tests or treatments are required, these will be explained fully during your consultation. The Neuropsychology department at BMI Healthcare offer treatment and testing for a wide range of problems including:
