Orthoptics is one of the Allied Health Professional professions that deals with the diagnosis and management of eye movement disorders and binocular vision problems.
Orthoptists will manage a wide range of eye problems, including squints, lazy eyes, and double vision problems.
They use exercises to improve the binocular status of eyes i.e. improving muscle tone and focussing problems. They can also use patching to improve vision in children, prisms to help with double vision in adults and coloured overlays to help with reading difficulties.
Orthoptists work closely within the Ophthalmology team, assessing pre and post op squints, measurements for Consultants, improving reduced vision in children and aiding double vision in adults while recovery takes place.
