What is paediatrics?

Paediatrics is the area of medicine that looks after infants, children and adolescents. You might also hear it referred to as child health, or as the care of children and young people (CYP).

Our clinicians offer treatment across a variety of specialties, ranging from general paediatric medicine, led by consultant paediatricians, to complex surgery, led by our consultant surgeons.

Our network of specialists offers expertise in:

Some of the surgical procedures we perform most commonly include: tonsillectomy, adenoid removal (adenoidectomy), ear correction surgery (pinnaplasty), insertion of grommets, hernia repair, circumcision, and tongue tie for breastfed babies experiencing difficulties feeding.

We also offer surgery for sports injuries, performed by our highly experienced orthopaedic consultants. This includes surgical repair of ligament injuries as well as arthroscopy (keyhole surgery).

If your child needs help with something we haven’t covered on this page, you can check which specialties are available at your local Circle Health Group hospital or give us a call and one of our friendly advisors will be able to help you.

You won’t always need a GP referral to see one of our private paediatric consultants. If you don’t have a referral and would like to go private, give us a call and we will let you know what to do.

We offer expert care for children and young people at 15 of our hospitals across the UK. You can see a paediatric consultant at any of the below locations:

Our paediatric teams are experts in the care of children and young people. From the moment you arrive at one of our hospitals, we'll work to make you and your child feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible.

When it comes to healthcare, one size doesn't fit all. This is especially true in paediatrics, where our specialists see patients ranging from tiny babies to older teenagers. From start to finish, our approach will be built around your child's individual needs.

If you come for an appointment during the day, our clinics are carefully designed to be safe and comfortable for children, with everything from breastfeeding-friendly rooms for nursing mothers to toys for our younger visitors.

If you need to stay in hospital, you will be looked after by a designated registered children's nurse, who has undergone specialist training related to the care of children and young people. During their stay, your child will be able to order food from a special children's menu.

Children who need surgery will be looked after in designated areas with special attention paid to our safeguarding policy . We take care of everything so that you don't have to worry.

For our younger visitors, you can read a special story book ahead of your visit for surgery so that you can talk to your child about what to expect in an age-appropriate way. You can view our story book here.

In addition to this, the Royal College of Anaesthetists has created a fun and easy-to-understand story to help children know what to expect from a general anaesthetic, using familiar Beano characters to help reduce any anxiety. Read 'Dennis has an Anaesthetic' here.

Our children and young person's services are available to people with private health insurance as well as people who are paying for their own treatment.

Many parents don't realise that their children are included in their private medical insurance policies, so it's always worth checking with your insurer.

If you choose to self-pay for treatment, you can take advantage of our flexible payment options, which allow you to spread the cost over a period of 10 months to five years.

Going private is more affordable than you think.
