What is developmental paediatrics?
Developmental paediatrics is the assessment of children to ascertain their developmental status. This would include:
- Speech and language delay
- Learning difficulties
- Diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Social communication disorders, including the diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism
Accurate diagnosis means that children, and their parents, can be given the appropriate support and advice required to ensure the best possible therapy and support. This is particularly relevant when dealing with the difficulties of engaging with education and multidisciplinary services that require clear diagnoses in order to provide the appropriate support activities.
Helping parents have an understanding not just of any developmental difficulties and how best to treat them, but also to negotiate the complex support services available to provide therapy and support.
