What is Cardio Pulmonary Exercise Test (CPET)?
The CPET machine provides a medical test which will accurately measure the function of your heart and lungs in response to exercise.
The test involves using a bike or aerobic pedal exerciser to a set protocol whilst wearing a mouthpiece or a mask. The test will involve a gradual increase in the intensity of exercise, during which your breathing, your electrocardiogram (ECG), blood pressure and oxygen saturation will be recorded and monitored. The test is designed so that the more you are able to do, the more information is gained. However, the test may be stopped if you get too tired, or you fulfil certain ending criteria.
The test can be used as a pre assessment tool to identify if any additional pre of post surgery care is required, but also in diagnosis of conditions and for the training of athletes. Diseases that affect the heart, lungs, circulation, or blood, will cause an abnormal response to exercise. Exercise testing is useful to help evaluate the cause of shortness of breath that otherwise cannot be determined at rest.
The CPET machine is also used extensively for athletes and in sports training programmes to give an accurate reflection as to an individuals fitness levels and it can provide an ideal basis for designing fitness programmes and monitoring progress.
