Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Shoulder replacement surgery is often required due to the effects of severe arthritis. Visit our website for more information and book online today.

What is shoulder replacement surgery?

Shoulder replacement surgery is often required due to the effects of severe arthritis. Shoulder replacement surgery involves removing the damaged ball socket by cutting the front of the shoulder and then replacing the top of the arm bone with a metal ball and sometimes replacing the socket of the shoulder with a plastic surface.

This operation is normally carried out if physiotherapy, medicines and injections have not been successful in improving mobility and reducing pain.

What are the benefits of shoulder replacement surgery?

The benefits of this type of surgery are that shoulder pain is reduced or eliminated and shoulder movement is usually improved. It also allows people to sleep easier at night if the patient has night pain and cannot get comfortable in bed. It usually takes between three and six months to recover from a shoulder replacement but this is dependent on the individual.

What will happen during my shoulder replacement surgery?

When you meet with your consultant surgeon they'll ensure that you have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about your shoulder replacement surgery, they'll discuss with you what'll happen before, during and after the procedure and any pain you might have. Take this time with your consultant surgeon to ensure your mind is put at rest.

How safe is shoulder replacement surgery?

Your consultant will go through any risks as these will vary dependent on the individual.
