The Stretta Procedure is an effective, unique and minially invasive way to treat Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).
What is Stretta?
Stretta is a unique and minimally invasive procedure to treat persistent symptoms of GORD and is an alternative to traditional surgical anti-reflux options . The procedure can reduce and resolve reflux symptoms and can eliminate the need for medication in specific patients.
Why should I have Stretta?
Acid reflux can impact significantly on your overall quality of life. You may suffer from the following symptoms;
- Chronic cough/ hoarseness
- Sleep apnoea
- Acid erosion of teeth
- Chest pain
- Recurrent pneumonia
What happens during the Stretta procedure?
The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic, but is a day case procedure. It involves passing a camera down your throat to locate the lower end of the gullet. The camera takes precise measurements. A special catheter is placed at this level where treatment is delivered by four tiny needles which are carefully placed into the gullet wall. The muscle is treated with special radiofrequency energy – in the following weeks after treatment, this remodels and strengthens the muscle tissue in the lower gullet, resulting in improved barrier function and fewer episodes of reflux.
What are the side effects and recovery times?
You may feel mild chest discomfort following Stretta. Side effects from this treatment are extremely rare, but you may experience the following side effects;
- Chest pain
- Difficulty swallowing
- Epigastric discomfort
You will be provided with a liquid diet plan following your procedure to follow for 24 hours, and a soft diet to follow for two weeks after this. Patients are advised to continue their previous antacid medication for two months following Stretta.
