What is UroLift®?
The UroLift® System is a new, minimally invasive treatment that alleviates the urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
It is normal for the prostate gland to get larger with age, but due to the enlargement, it can tighten around the urethra, blocking the flow of urine in the bladder (see fig.1)
Through a UroLift® procedure, the urologist places permanent implants that will hold and lift the prostate lobes, thus relieving the pressure from the urethra and allowing the urine to flow normally. The procedure is conducted under either local or general anaesthesia. Once the area is anaesthetised, the consultant urologist will insert through the urethra the UroLift® delivery device. This device has a small needle that will place the tiny implants, unblocking the urethra.
Neotract®IncThe UroLift® System procedure is an alternative to those who are looking for something different then medication but also do not want to undergo an invasive surgery.
What are the benefits of this procedure?
The new UroLift® System has the following benefits:
- It’s minimally invasive
- provides rapid symptom relief, as early as 2 weeks after the procedure
- preserves the erectile and ejaculatory function
- it doesn’t typically require a catheter or an overnight stay after the treatment
- offers a quick recovery time
- has long-lasting results
What are the risks?
Among the potential side effects that can appear following the UroLift® System procedure are:
- presence of blood in the urine
- painful urination
- micturition urgency
- pelvic pain
- urge incontinence
Your consultant urologist will be able to inform you on the potential complications of the procedure based on your condition.
Are there any alternatives?
If you suffer from an enlarged prostate, or benign prostate dysplasia, there are several treatment options available, depending on the intensity of your symptoms:
- watchful waiting: if your symptoms are mild, the consultant might just monitor the condition before deciding if any treatment is required
- laser resection of the prostate
- transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)
How quick will I recover?
Most patients can go home on the same day, typically without a catheter. Symptom relief can be noticed after little as two weeks. During the recovery period patients may experience some urinary discomfort.
Your consultant will be able to advise on how quickly you can return to day to day activities.
