Dr Barber was born and raised in Derbyshire, before attending medical school in Nottingham. He completed his respiratory training in Sheffield and Manchester, prior to being appointed as a consultant in Sheffield in 2005.
Dr Barber has a national profile in occupational and environmental lung disease and is a Medical Adviser to the Health and Safety Executive. He has an established research track record, having published over fifty peer reviewed publications, and is an honorary Reader at Sheffield University.
Dr Barber has also produced a wide-range of educational material including five book chapters and two e-learning modules; he is the lead author of the European Respiratory Society Monograph on Occupational Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis, and co-organises the British Thoracic Society Short Course in Occupational and Environmental Lung Disease.
