Personal Profile

Dr Helen Petersen is an experienced consultant oral surgeon, managing a broad range of surgical conditions. These include removal of teeth, roots, impacted teeth and wisdom teeth, surgical endodontics (apicectomy) and management of cysts of the jaws. Dr Petersen has a particular special interest in the removal/exposure of impacted canines and other teeth, for the provision of orthodontic treatment.

Dr Petersen is also experienced in the diagnosis and management of oral soft tissue conditions, such as ulcers and lichen planus. She spent several years training under a specialist facial pain service, at the world-renowned Eastman Dental Institute and accepts referrals for facial pain conditions. 

Dr Petersen treats both adults and children of all ages and is skilled in treating anxious patients, putting them at ease with her friendly and calming demeanour. She currently leads the paediatric oral surgery service for Manchester Foundation Trust, where she is a practicing consultant, receiving referrals from all around Greater Manchester. This role sees her working closely with paediatric dentists, orthodontists, restorative dentists and general practitioners, in the management of her patients. 

Additionally, Dr Petersen is a key member of the Manchester Hypodontia Clinic, managing patients with complex dental needs. In recognition of her excellent team working skills and clinical care, she has been awarded two clinical excellence awards.

Dr Petersen has a strong academic record, and is the current Editor-in-Chief of the international journal; Oral Surgery. She has a PhD and has published extensively and presented her research internationally. She is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester, and Programme Director for the Masters programmes in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Nationally, she sits on the Council of the British Association of Oral Surgeons, and is an invited examiner for the Overseas Registration Examination.

As a committed educator, Dr Petersen holds a Professional Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. In recognition of her teaching, she is also an accredited Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and Member of the Academy of Medical Educators. She teaches postgraduate and undergraduate students, as well as specialist trainees.

Dr Petersen is a General Dental Council registered Specialist in Oral Surgery and Member of the Royal College of Surgeons. She completed her surgical training in South Wales, Bristol and London.
