Personal profile

Mr Hunt is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising entirely in knee surgery. His NHS practice is based at York Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust where he also undertakes trauma surgery and provides an acute knee injury service.

Knee Surgery

This includes all aspect of knee surgery including arthroscopy (keyhole surgery), ligament reconstruction and sports knee surgery (from amateur to professional) and a full range of arthritis surgery including osteotomy (re-alignment), chondral and meniscal replacement techniques, uni-compartmental, partial and revision knee replacement.

Mr Hunt's aim is to maximise the function of all his patients throughout their lives by eliminating or reducing their pain, returning them to normal activities as much as possible and where possible, delaying the need for knee replacement.

He therefore also has a keen interest in early arthritis/arthritis prevention techniques including articular cartilage surgery (autologous chondrocyte implantation) and meniscal cartilage repair and replacement (using the menaflex meniscal implant) which can be used to replace a damaged meniscus.

He is part of the national ‘ACTIVE’ trial of autologous chondrocyte implantation (resurfacing of the damaged surface of the knee with a patients own re-grown cartilage cells) and he can therefore offer this treatment both for NHS and private patients and accepts tertiary referrals for this.

Personal Background and Training

Following graduation from Cambridge University and St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, London, Mr Hunt undertook four years basic surgical training in London. He then completed a one year sports knee surgery fellowship at Imperial College, based at Charing Cross Hospital. He was involved in a number of different areas of research in respect of problems affecting the knee and published a new system of accurate articular cartilage mapping of the knee, the principles of which are now widely used by Orthopaedic surgeons.

After five years specialist Orthopaedic training in Yorkshire, he completed a one year fellowship in Australia with one of the world’s leading knee surgeons and was involved in the treatment of many elite sportsmen.

Mr Hunt has published a number of papers in peer reviewed journals and presented numerous papers at scientific and orthopaedic meetings nationally and internationally. Ongoing research is vital to realise the benefits of advances in treatment and medical technology and he actively monitors his patients and continues to be involved in clinical research projects.

His aim is to return quality of life to his patients as comfortably and quickly as their underlying conditions will allow.

Mr Hunt played rugby for many years and is a keen skier and tennis player, understanding the frustrations (for amateurs as well as professionals) of being unable to return to sport after an injury.

He works closely with specialist sports and knee physiotherapists to maximise the benefit of any treatment required.
