Mr Karthikeyan graduated with MBBS in 1996 from the Madras Medical College. Basic Surgical training was in Yorkshire and passed the AFRCS in 2002. He entered the West Midlands Orthopaedic Training Programme in 2004.
During his higher surgical Orthopaedic training, he passed the intercollegiate exit exam in Orthopaedics and Trauma - FRCS (Tr& Orth) in 2008 and was subsequently awarded the Certificate of Completion of Orthopaedic Training (CCT) in 2010.
He entered the highly competitive and prestigious Cavendish Fellowship in lower limb Arthroplasty at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in 2010. This one-year fellowship was an advanced training Fellowship in Primary and complex revision arthroplasty of the hip and knee joints.
After completion of this Fellowship in 2011, he entered a second advanced Fellowship in Pelvic and Acetabular Trauma at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.
Upon completion of this Fellowship, he was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham in 2013.
Mr Karthikeyan specialises in complex and primary hip replacements, Pelvic and Acetabular Trauma, complex lower limb trauma and periprosthetic fractures of the lower limb at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
He provides a tertiary regional pelvic and acetabular trauma service at the Major trauma centre for the West Midlands region.
He has an active interest in Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Education and is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham in the School of Health sciences.
He has completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education from the University of Birmingham and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
He is also a Senior Academy tutor for the 5th year Medical Students at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
He also featured in one of the episodes of the BBC Documentary “Surgeons at the edge of Life“ which was based on emergency surgical treatment of patients at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Mr. Karthikeyan is a keen Badminton player and enjoys trekking with his wife and two young boys.
