Colorectal surgery is a field of medicine that deals with repairing the damage caused by disorders in the intestines, colon, rectum and anus. It can also be required in cases of obstruction, injury or tissue damage, or when blockages are preventing the normal elimination of faeces.

The gastrointestinal tract comprises the system of tubes that transport food from the mouth and discharge waste from the anus. The Colorectal speciality is mostly concerned with the lower part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which can be sub-divided into the colon, small bowel, and the rectum itself.

If you are experiencing any of these common concerns, consider booking a private appointment with one of our colorectal specialists.

Patients are regularly referred by a GP for the following symptoms:

  • Change in bowel habit
  • Rectal bleeding

Your initial consultation at BMI Ross Hall Hospital will begin with our enquiries team offering you an appointment at a time that suits you and providing all the necessary information to help you choose the right specialist for your specific needs.

During your initial consultation, your colorectal specialist will first learn about your medical history, your family’s medical history and your symptoms to get a clear picture of the situation, your concerns and determine the appropriate next steps.

Depending on your symptoms and medical history, they will then usually examine the rectum and lower part of the colon using a specialist piece of equipment called a rigid sigmoidoscope. This small device uses light to allow a colorectal specialist to examine the area effectively.

Based on their findings, your colorectal consultant may request some further investigative tests to assess your condition. Occasionally, a flexible sigmoidoscopy may be required to enable the surgeon to see deeper into the colon.

Further diagnostic tests may be required following this. In some cases, it might be possible for you to have a scan or test on the same day as your initial consultation, but usually, we would arrange the test for a few days to a couple of weeks after your initial appointment at a time and day that suits you.
