Where a rheumatic condition involves inflammation, various medicines are available to help reduce swelling.

If your pain is not being adequately controlled by over-the-counter painkillers, your consultant can prescribe stronger painkillers where appropriate.

Steroid injections are a common treatment for rheumatic conditions, providing both anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving benefits. If they prove effective at managing your symptoms they can be repeated periodically. Depending on the source of your pain, the injection may be given by your rheumatologist or under ultrasound guidance by a radiologist.
