Knee surgery

Diagnosis and treatment for your knee problem

Patients often come to us having either injured their knee in an accident (usually taking part in sport), or due to an underlying condition affecting the joint or surrounding tissues (e.g. osteoarthritis).

Our consultants are experts at relieving pain and returning you to the level of activity you enjoyed before you had knee problems, with minimal or no symptoms.

They use a range of measures to do this as quickly and safely as possible.

These range from therapy, through to advanced surgical techniques, depending on the nature of the symptoms and condition.

Common conditions that patients come to us with include:

  • Meniscus tears
  • ACL rupture
  • Cartilage defects
  • Arthritis
  • Patella (kneecap) maltracking or dislocation
  • Fractures & dislocations around the knee

Our specialists work closely with an expert team of physiotherapists to aid recovery, meaning all the treatments you need are available in one place.

Our goal is to make private healthcare accessible and affordable for all, and we have very competitively priced self-pay packages, along with payment plan options if you are coming to us direct (rather than via GP or insurance referral).

Our consultants are leaders in their field and have access to cutting-edge diagnostic equipment.

The combination of their skills and our facilities ensures you receive the treatment that is most effective in your circumstances.

That treatment could include a range of options:

  • Physiotherapy: we will help restore function to your knee using a tailored rehabilitation program, which can incorporate manipulative therapies, such as massage, acupuncture, and ultra-sound wave therapy. Our physios might also recommend a brace or support, some kind of walking aid, and/or pain relief (analgesia).
  • Injections: these are a less invasive solution than surgery and broadly fall into two categories:
    • non-biological therapies: including injecting cortisone steroid or a synthetic version of the synovial fluid that naturally occurs in your knee (known as visco-supplementation)
    • biological therapies: where we use platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and other alternatives that are rich in nutrients and other healing factors, which are then injected into the problem area to facilitate healing
  • Knee Surgery: Our expert surgeons perform two different types of surgery, keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery and open surgery (arthroscopic assisted), where a larger incision is needed.

Surgery is always a last resort, but can be necessary when there is structural damage to the knee, for example in the case of:

  • Meniscus tears
  • ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) tears
  • Cartilage defects
  • Degenerative conditions

Usually when surgery is required, it will be followed by a period of rehabilitation.

Our consultants will work closely with one of our physiotherapy team to restore knee function (to pre-injury levels if that is the cause of the problem), using a tailor-made rehabilitation regime.

From the first moment you come to us to the moment you are discharged, we aim to make the process as speedy, convenient and reassuring as possible for you.

Referral

Your journey will start with a referral.

We accept referrals from GPs or health insurance providers, as well as from private patients who book a consultation directly.

We aim to arrange a private consultation for you within as little as 48 hours from referral or first contact, at a time that is convenient for you.

Consultation

During your initial consultation, which will last around half-an-hour, your consultant will talk with you about your specific circumstances and needs.

After a taking a thorough medical history and doing examinations, your consultant may request further investigations, such as blood tests and scans (X-ray, MRI, CT or ultrasound, dependent on the nature of the problem).

If these investigations are needed and a diagnosis cannot be made straight away, we will organise a follow-up appointment in around a week, at a time that is convenient for you.

Following their diagnosis, your specialist will go through your results in plain English, so you are able to make an informed decision on treatment.

Treatment and after-care

As detailed above, there is a range of treatment paths that your consultant might suggest.

Medical treatments can be obtained at our on-site pharmacy, while injections can be done in clinic by your consultant.

If more conservative routes have been exhausted, and you need surgery, this can normally be arranged in around two weeks.

Dependent on the treatment plan you have agreed, your consultant may see you for a follow-up a few weeks later to check on your progress (this will happen automatically in the case of surgery).
