When you visit us at The Meriden Hospital, you’ll benefit from treatment tailored to your specific requirements, access to state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment from an experienced Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a surgical speciality that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, injuries and complications of the teeth, mouth, face, jaw and neck.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons at The Meriden Hospital can help you with:

  • Oral Surgery
  • Surgical removal of wisdom teeth, buried roots, buried canine teeth and impacted teeth
  • Treatment of cysts and tumours of the jaws
  • Screening for Oral Cancer

  • Management of problems affecting the soft tissue lining of the mouth, such as white patches and mouth ulcers
  • Treatment of salivary gland problems, including stone removal
  • Treatment of facial fractures and lacerations
  • Treatment for disorders of the lower jaw (mandible) and jaw joint (temporomandibular joint)
  • Investigation and treatment of facial and dental pain

  • Facial skin surgery
  • Dental implant surgery and bone grafting

Most people will be referred to our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons by their GP, dentist or another maxillofacial specialist from outside the region or a consultant in another speciality.

When you first meet with your consultant at The Meriden Hospital, they will ask you about your symptoms. They will want to know things like:

  • What symptoms do you have?
  • How long have you had them?
  • Do you have any pain in your neck, face or jaw? If so, can you describe it?
  • Do you have any particular concerns about your symptoms?

They will also carry out a physical examination of the affected area(s).

Most people who visit us will have already had dental X-rays at their dentist, and these will normally be available for your consultant to review at this time.

Due to the complexity of many oral and maxillofacial problems, a variety of investigations may be required. These could include X-ray, CT, a biopsy or a TMJ arthroscopy (a form of keyhole surgery). These can all be arranged for you by your consultant if required.

Your medical history, the results of your physical examination and of any tests done will all be used to make a diagnosis. Your consultant may discuss treatment options within a multidisciplinary team, with specialists like orthodontists or ENT surgeons.

Every aspect of your care, from initial assessment and diagnosis through to treatment and aftercare, each step of your care will be discussed with you in advance so that you know what to expect. If you have any questions or concerns, they will be happy to talk about these with you.
