Woman-on-bed-with-hip-pain
Hip pain is very common, impacting people of all ages, and at various stages of their life. There are many common causes of hip pain, with most being a case of either injury or arthritis.

Hip pain is generally more common in older people, because your cartilage (a tough, flexible tissue that protects your joints from damage) can become worn out as you age. This causes your bones underneath to become increasingly stiff, weak, and painful, a condition known as osteoarthritis.

You can experience hip pain caused by arthritis if you are younger, too. This is most likely to be rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune disease that happens when your immune system mistakenly attacks the healthy cells in your body.

Hip pain - no matter the kind of joint pain condition you have - can limit your movement, preventing you from performing usual, everyday movements such as bending, sitting, and even standing. This can have a knock-on impact on how you live daily life, interfering with activities such as going to the shop or for a walk, and even flaring up at night and disrupting your sleep.

But it doesn't have to be that way. In most instances, hip pain is highly treatable. At The Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle, Greater Manchester, we have a team of highly experienced hip specialists who help thousands of people each year to take control of their hip pain and get back to living life as normal again.

There are many possible reasons why you might experience hip pain, including:

Osteoarthritis

A form of arthritis that happens when your cartilage breaks down, leading to your bones rubbing against one another, causing severe stiffness and pain.

Rheumatoid arthritis

An inflammatory autoimmune disease, causing pain, swelling, and limited movement.

Bursitis

This usually causes a dull, aching pain in your joints caused by inflamed bursa, which are fluid-filled sacs that protect your joints.

Post-traumatic osteoarthritis

Arthritis caused by a fracture that has failed to heal properly and caused extensive, long-term damage to your bone.

Labral tears

An injury to the tissue that holds the ball and socket parts of your hip together.

Osteonecrosis

When blood flow to your bone is disrupted, causing damage to your joint.

Whatever the cause of your hip pain, our experienced orthopaedic consultants can help you to identify the root of your symptoms and devise a tailored treatment plan to reduce or even eliminate your hip problems.

Our hip surgeons in Manchester consider how hip pain impacts many aspects of your life, such as your social life, your sex life, and even your career. We build your treatment plan around your needs to ensure you feel safe and supported at every stage of your journey with us - from your initial consultation right through to your recovery period.

We offer a broad scope of non-surgical and surgical treatment options for hip pain. These include:

Steroid injection therapy

This involves the injection of steroid medication into your painful joint and soft tissue to reduce pain and inflammation in that part of your body.

Physiotherapy

This is a highly effective form of treatment that involves working with a dedicated physiotherapist to follow a tailored exercise and stretch routine that helps improve your mobility and strengthen the muscles around your hips.

NSAIDs

Traditional painkillers to help reduce pain and inflammation in your hip (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).

Heat therapy

Using heat pads or ice packs to relax tension in the muscles in your hip, or numb the pain

Hip replacement surgery

Surgery to remove your damaged hip joint and replace it with an artificial component, known as a prosthesis

Hip revision surgery

Surgery to repair an artificial implant in your hip that has become damaged over time.

Hip arthroscopy

Keyhole surgery to diagnose and treat a broad range of hip problems.

Hip debridement surgery

Surgery to remove damaged components surrounding your hip joint to help it function properly.

Your hip surgeon in Manchester will use your first consultation to uncover the cause of your hip pain. They will start by carefully examining your hip to check for pain points and listen for a popping or snapping sound that can sometimes be associated with advanced stages of arthritis.

After examining your hip, your consultant might send you to have an X-ray with one of our radiologists. X-rays look inside your bones and soft tissue to examine the extent of damage to your hip. They are one of the most effective ways to examine your bones, helping identify abnormalities or damage in any bones across your body. In some cases you might also be sent for a CT scan or an MRI scan. We have an excellent imaging department onsite.

After determining the cause of your hip pain, your hip surgeon will discuss the kind of treatment options available to you and which option best suits your needs. You can ask your consultant any questions you like about your treatment for hip pain at The Alexandra Hospital. They are there to provide as much information as possible and put your mind at ease, should you have any concerns about what to expect from treatment.

Consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon Mr Bilal Barkatali shares why you should choose the Alexandra Hospital for your treatment. He says:

"The Alexandra Hospital has excellent clinic facilities allowing for assessing my patients comfortably and effectively. The radiology department has the best diagnostic equipment available with expert radiologists who can provide accurate reports and opinions.

"If surgery is needed, we will discuss it with you in detail, plan it appropriately, and deliver it quickly at your convenience. We will carry out your pre-operative assessment to ensure you are fit enough for surgery and whether any precautions need to be taken to ensure your safety.

"One huge advantage of performing surgery at the Alexandra Hospital is the higher care facilities available. Sometimes, patients with complex medical needs require one-to-one monitoring until they are safe. The well-equipped and staffed intensive care unit (ICU) at the Alex allows more complex patients to have private surgery.

"Once the surgery is complete and you have recovered, the excellent physiotherapy and rehab teams take over and ensure optimal recovery. I feel this is an excellent environment for success."

Our imaging centre at The Alexandra Hospital

At The Alexandra Hospital in Manchester, we have an advanced imaging and diagnostics centre to help diagnose your concern as quickly as possible. We have also recently opened a new MRI and CT centre located on the ground floor of our hospital next to the main reception.

You might need an MRI or CT scan to take a closer, more detailed look at your soft tissues, for example if your consultant thinks you have injuries to your ligaments (fibrous, connective tissue that attaches bone to bone) or tendons (fibrous tissue that attaches muscle to bone), which might be causing you pain and swelling.

We offer robotics-assisted hip surgery at The Alexandra Hospital in Manchester Robotic tools help your surgeon build a detailed surgical plan before your operation. The robot moves as they move, combining the skill and expertise of an orthopaedic surgeon with innovative technology to perform the surgery as precisely as possible. Robotics-assisted surgery also offers a 3D view of your hip, allowing your surgeon to tailor the surgery entirely to your anatomy.

While traditional surgery is safe and effective, robotics-assisted surgery has a few key benefits, including durability and longer-lasting results, and a faster recovery time.

You can discuss the possibility of having robotics-assisted surgery at your first consultation with your orthopaedic consultant. They will share more information about robotics-assisted surgery and its benefits, so you can make an informed decision whether it's the right option for you.
