What is colorectal surgery?

Colorectal surgery as a field of medicine deals with repairing the damage caused by disorders in the rectum, anus and colon. It can also be required in cases of obstruction, injury or ischemia or when blockages are preventing the normal elimination of faeces.

The treatment may involve a team approach to treatment including specialist colorectal nurses, dieticians and consultants.

When you should see a colorectal specialist?

For certain intestinal disorders colorectal surgery is the only treatment that will improve or relieve symptoms, such as:

  • Colorectal cancer
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Diverticulitis

Other conditions where surgery might be recommended but to a lesser extent are:

  • Haemorrhoids
  • Anal fissures
  • Rectal prolapse
  • Bowel incontinence
