Early pregnancy and dating scan

A dating scan is usually the first ultrasound scan you will have when pregnant, usually done between 6 and 10 weeks of pregnancy.

What is a dating scan?

A dating scan is usually the first ultrasound scan you will have when pregnant. The main purpose is to establish the number of weeks you are pregnant and make an estimated date of expected delivery. This first early ultrasound scan also provides you and your consultant with additional important information, such as the number of babies you are pregnant with.

When is the scan?

Usually this initial scan is taken between 6 and 10 weeks of pregnancy.

What happens during the scan?

The ultrasound will almost always be done through the belly, allowing you to see your baby for the first time. Accurate measurements and images are taken of the gestational sac, the crown to rump length of the embryo (to accurately date the pregnancy) and the pelvic region. After the scan you will be given a full report, which will include the number of weeks you are pregnant and your expected delivery date
