Mr Jose Garcia

Mr Garcia studied to become a doctor at Sheffield medical School before continuing his training as a junior doctor in medicine and surgery at the Royal Hallamshire and Northern General Hospitals, Sheffield.

He went on to specialise in Surgery in general and then Orthopaedics, training under many excellent and renowned surgeons in Sheffield and the surrounding District General Hospitals between 1992 and 1999. He attained his surgical qualifications, FRCS and FRCS (trauma and orthopaedics) during this period.

Joe developed his interest in the wrist and hand throughout this period, and went on to do a Fellowship in this speciality at the internationally famous Sydney Hand Unit in 2000, where he cultivated his skills with hand surgeons of the highest level.

Returning to a consultant post in the NHS at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, Joe has achieved more than 20 years of experience in this field, managing the large diversity and often complex nature of hand and wrist issues.

Leading on the management of trauma of the hand and wrist coming through the doors of A&E, he has operated on all extremes of wrist and hand injuries to return patients to their best possible function.

He has a large experience in the management of the many common arthritic conditions of the hand, including the management of these
with the latest available procedures, such as small joint replacements and wrist replacements. Nerve problems affecting the hand and finger deformities are some of his most common cases, that he will deal with, with good success.

The diverse nature of hand problems can make diagnosis difficult on rare occasions, but with his clinical experience and latest up to date investigations, he always strives to find a solution for all his patients.

He has been enthusiastic in the teaching of medical students and doctors at all levels, running his own fellowship in hand surgery for many years now, finessing the hand surgical skills of experienced surgeons before they become consultants.

He has taught hand examination skills at all levels, locally, nationally and internationally. He has been consistently invited to the best national training conferences to teach on his speciality, receiving glowing feedback.

Above all, he prides himself on a friendly, approachable and patient focused philosophy in his interaction with all his patients.

Clinical Interests

Mr Garcia has developed a very high level of experience in the management of the injured hand. Interested in the management of wrist fractures since before being a consultant he has been at the forefront of managing these injuries with the latest surgical techniques where required.

Finger injuries can be incredibly difficult to get right, and his interest and approach, is to manage these to attain the best possible function by a balanced combination of surgery and hand therapy. He has, as a result, developed close working relationships with excellent hand therapists in the region, allowing his patients to have a
multidisciplinary approach to their problems.

Arthritic conditions of the hand, are unfortunately too common and cause huge distress and discomfort. He has recourse to the whole armoury of management tools to improve pain in these conditions.

Hand surgery is diverse, and it's the skillful management of these diverse set off conditions with the rewards of seeing patients improve, that continues to interest him and maintain a high level of enthusiasm for the specialty.
