Dr Schmitt Qualified from the Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main in Germany in 1995 and subsequently held junior doctor positions in Medicine (Katharinen Krankenhaus FFM), Cardiothoracic Surgery (University Hospital Freiburg) and Cardiology (City Hospital Ludwigshafen) before emigrating to the UK and undertaking a Junior doctor rotation in Blackpool (1997-1999) and gaining his membership exam (MRCP London) in 1999. He subsequently undertook a PhD at the Wales Heart Research Institute in Cardiff investigating the effects of natriuretic peptides on venous capacitance in Health and Heart failure and thereafter completed his Cardiology training in the North West rotation including a 2 year out of program cardiac imaging training fellowship at the Glenfield Hospital in Leicester (2006-2008).
He was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at Wythenshawe Hospital in 2008 where he set up Cardiac MR and subsequently Cardiac CT services. The cross-sectional cardiac Imaging (CSI) unit at Wythenshawe is now one of the largest dedicated Cardiac Imaging facilities in the world performing close to 7000 cardiac studies a year. Dr Schmitt has a longstanding interest in Cardiovascular research and has published [over 75 peer reviewed manuscripts and 4 book chapters] across a wide spectrum of cardiovascular medicine. He has successfully (co-)supervised 7 higher degree students and contributed to research income in-excess of £ 6 Million. He continues to be one of the highest volume cardiac CSI reporters in the country (>2000 exams/year) and his 2nd opinion is frequently sought by his peers and as an expert opinion in legal cases. Dr Schmitt has also a very longstanding and active teaching portfolio and he organises local and national courses and conferences dedicated to promoting the role of cardiac CSI in optimising clinical decision making and patient care.
Dr Schmitt is a BMA ambassador and has been the previous LNC chair of Wythenshawe Hospital and is currently the elected Staff Governor (Medical) for the Manchester University Hospital Foundation Trust (MFT).
