Personal Profile

Dr Schmitt Qualified from the Goethe University in Frankfurt/Main in Germany in 1996 and subsequently held junior doctor positions in Medicine (Katharinen-Krankenhaus, Frankfurt), Cardiothoracic Surgery (University Hospital, Freiburg) and Cardiology (City Hospital, Ludwigshafen) before emigrating to the UK. He undertook a Junior Doctor Rotation in Blackpool (1997-1999), gaining his membership exam (MRCP London) in 1999.

He subsequently secured the BCS De Bono research fellowship and gained a PhD at the Wales Heart Research Institute in Cardiff applying radionuclide technologies to investigate the effects of natriuretic peptides on vascular tone in Health and Heart failure. He completed his Cardiology training in the North West including a 2-year out of program cardiac imaging training fellowship at the Glenfield Hospital in Leicester (2006-2008).

He was appointed Consultant Cardiologist at Wythenshawe Hospital in 2008 where he set-up Cardiac MR and subsequently Cardiac CT services. The cross-sectional cardiac Imaging unit at Wythenshawe Campus, now part of Manchester University Foundation Trust, is one of the largest dedicated Cardiac Imaging facilities in the country performing ~ 7000 cardiac studies a year. Dr Schmitt is Level III accredited, in both CMR and cCT, and performs and/or reports over 1000 CTA, over 1000 CMR, and over 600 community Echocardiogram studies annually.

Dr Schmitt continues to have an active research interest and has published [>150 peer reviewed manuscripts] across a wide spectrum of cardiovascular medicine. He has successfully supervised 8 PHD/MD students. Dr Schmitt has served as an elected board member on both the Board of the British Society of Cardiac MR (as clinical standards lead) as well as on the board of the British Society of Cardiac Imaging/Cardiac CT (as research Lead). His opinion is frequently sought in medico-legal disputes.

Clinical Interests

Any diagnostic challenge in patients with either chest pains, breathlessness, palpitations, fainting/syncope, heart muscle disorders, coronary artery disease, infiltrative and metabolic disorders or congenital heart defects.

Cardio-oncology (Member of the ESC working group and author of Textbook chapter on Imaging assessment in Cardio-oncology) i.e. diagnosis, risk stratification, surveillance and management guidance of Cancer survivors.
