Personal Profile

Dr Soo Park is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at NHS Lanarkshire and the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, with a special interest in cataract surgery, Medical Retina and Uveitis. He is on the General Medical Council Specialist Register for Ophthalmology.

Dr Park graduated from University of London in 1999 and undertook an MD (Res) degree in Molecular Medicine and Genetic Association Studies at the renowned Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital, London. His ophthalmic training was based at St Thomas’ Hospital in London and at the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology, Glasgow. He broadened his knowledge in ophthalmology with further sub-specialist training in Glaucoma. 

During his training he was awarded the Medicine Publishing Company/Glaxo Welcome Medical Fellowship Award and won the Royal College of Ophthalmologists Annual Congress prize for the best poster presentation. Furthermore, he has won numerous awards throughout his training including Alcon Research, Research Support Grants from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and from the Institute of Child Health Dean’s Travel Fund.

Dr Park is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow and maintains an active interest in teaching undergraduate medical students in general ophthalmology, and cataract surgery to trainee ophthalmologists from the West of Scotland run-through programme. He is a member of the Scottish Uveitis Network and is currently the Lead Clinician in Uveitis at NHS Lanarkshire. 

Dr Park has gained a broad spectrum of experience in cataract surgery. He is an accomplished cataract surgeon having performed over 9000 cataract surgeries, and maintains excellent surgical outcomes, with regular auditing showing complication rates well below the national average. 

Having gained a sound knowledge in dealing with complex cases in medical ophthalmology, Dr Park has expertise in Medical Retina and Uveitis. This includes management of wet age-related macular degeneration with intravitreal injections, diabetic eye disease (diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema) and retinal vein occlusions.

Dr Park is able to treat patients safely and confidently, and all decisions regarding treatment are made with his patient’s best interest as the priority.
