Personal Profile

Mr Thomas Lam obtained his MBChB degree from Leeds School of Medicine on a British Council scholarship in 1997.

He undertook basic surgical training in Leeds, followed by a clinical research fellowship specialising in Surgical Oncology and Tumour Immunology at the University of Hull Postgraduate Medical Institute, culminating in a PhD degree in 2005. He then underwent specialist training in Urology through the East of Scotland Training Programme in Urology, rotating through Aberdeen and Edinburgh, and latterly focusing on academic urology and laparoscopic pelvic oncology.

He was appointed as senior clinical lecturer and honorary consultant urological surgeon at the Academic Urology Unit, University of Aberdeen in 2011, on a clinical academic portfolio. He specialised in clinical trials, evidence synthesis, guideline development and core outcome set development. His total grant income as chief investigator, co-applicant and co-chief investigator in various UK government-funded clinical trials and projects is more than £7 million, and to date, he has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals including Lancet, Lancet Oncology and European Urology.

In 2016, he was appointed as a full-time NHS consultant urological surgeon and honorary senior lecturer at the Dept of Urology, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. His main clinical area of interests are in robotic radical prostatectomy, prostate cancer, kidney cancer, urinary tract infections and management of lower urinary tract symptoms in males and females. He is a member of the European Association of Urology Prostate Cancer Guideline Panel, and European Association of Urology Kidney Cancer Guideline Panel, who are responsible for issuing clinical practice guidelines in the management of prostate cancer and kidney cancer to urologists worldwide.

As a recognised expert in the management of prostate cancer and kidney cancer, and in clinical trial methodology, evidence synthesis and clinical guideline development, he travels regularly throughout Europe and beyond to deliver lectures and teaching workshops to urological trainees and clinicians. In spite of his clinical and academic achievements, the traits Mr. Lam values most are being an exceptional communicator, having the ability to listen, to have humility and to respect patients and colleagues as individuals.
