At Hendon Hospital, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to healthcare. So, before we recommend any treatment at all, we aim to get to know you. Once we have all the information we need about your symptoms, medical history and personal circumstances, only then will we know what’s right for you.

It might be that you don’t need surgery at all. For many people, joint pain can be managed without surgical intervention, using non-invasive methods such as steroid injections, pain medication or physiotherapy.

However, for many people the damage to their joint has progressed to a point where less invasive methods aren’t enough to significantly improve their quality of life. In this instance, you may well be recommended surgery.

If your Orthopaedic Consultant thinks that surgery is the right choice for you, they will only make this decision after they have discussed with you all the options and the possible outcomes.

We offer a range of surgical options for shoulder pain, including:

Rotator cuff repair surgery

Your rotator cuff consists of an important network of muscles and tendons that hold your shoulder in place. Overuse of the joint from repetitive activities, or an injury to your shoulder, can cause a tear in your rotator cuff tendon. This can cause significant pain and discomfort. Rotator cuff repair surgery can reattach the torn area of your tendon to the head of your humerus (upper arm bone). This can successfully reduce your pain and restore function to your shoulder.

Shoulder replacement surgery

Shoulder replacement might be suggested if you have severe joint pain induced by a chronic pain condition such as rheumatoid arthritis or shoulder bursitis.

Your Orthopaedic Surgeon could perform partial shoulder replacement surgery, in which the head of your humerus (upper arm bone) – which forms the ball of your shoulder joint – is removed and replaced with an artificial component. This is also known as a prosthesis. In other cases, your Surgeon will also replace the socket of your shoulder joint with a prosthesis. This is known as a total shoulder replacement.

The condition of your shoulder will determine which form of surgery you undergo. Your Consultant will discuss this in detail with you before your surgery.

Surgery for a dislocated shoulder

A dislocated shoulder is most often the result of an accident or injury. It means your humerus or upper arm bone is either partially or completely removed from its socket in your scapula (shoulder blade).

Most people won’t need surgery for this. Your Orthopaedic Surgeon can gently move your arm around your shoulder joint until it fits into your socket. This technique is known as reduction.

However, following a dislocation it is possible for your labrum (a ring of cartilage around your socket) to become damaged, causing instability in your shoulder and increasing your chances of it dislocating again. In this instance, your Surgeon will recommend surgery to repair damage to your labrum and reduce the risk of your shoulder dislocating again.

Shoulder arthroscopy

A shoulder arthroscopy is an operation that uses small incisions around your shoulder to examine the inside of your joint and diagnose your symptoms. The minimally invasive technique can also be used to perform several forms of treatment for damage to your shoulder.
