Is cosmetic surgery for me?
Cosmetic surgery isn't right for everyone. At BMI Healthcare, your initial consultation will be with a consultant surgeon - who will give you honest, and clinically accurate, advice about the procedure you're contemplating.
As you're talking to a surgeon, rather than a sales team, the advice you receive will enable you to make a fully informed decision - and proceed, if you choose to, with complete confidence.
All of our surgeons are of Consultant status. You'll find their names listed on the specialist register of the General Medical Council - and they each work alongside consultant anaesthetists. These leading professionals have chosen to work with BMI because our high standards of clinical excellence, and patient care, meet their own.
Although treatments are perceived to appeal to a person's vanity, it is becoming more apparent that the desire to undergo cosmetic surgery is less to do with chasing some media constructed ideal of youth and beauty and more to do with wanting to look our best to help improve our feelings of self-esteem.
Do I need a GP referral to see a Cosmetic Surgeon?
No, you don't. You can make a cosmetic surgery appointment with a Consultant at BMI without a referral from your GP.
Will my Consultant tell my GP of my decision to have surgery?
Your surgeon will talk to you about keeping your GP informed and how it is beneficial to keep him/her well briefed about any surgery you may choose to have. If you opt to go ahead with surgery your Consultant will ask for your permission to write to your GP for details of your medical history. This is good medical practice and is a safety precaution and important if you'll be having a general anaesthetic.
Why isn't the first consultation free?
When you see a consultant at BMI they will be acting in your best interests. So, because you are paying to see a Consultant Specialist you can be assured that they have one thing at the forefront of their minds - your welfare. Don't forget, at BMI you will see a Consultant. This means they have experience at the highest level and will offer that to you. Free consultations offered by some providers are not with the surgeon who will perform your surgery so we'd urge you to check out the details and be sure you're getting the best quality care.
Will my first appointment at BMI be with a salesperson, a cosmetic advisor or a Consultant Specialist?
Will my first appointment at BMI be with a salesperson, a cosmetic advisor or a Consultant Specialist?
So will my consultation be with the surgeon who'd perform the surgery?
Your first appointment will be with the Consultant who will perform your surgery, and provide you with follow up care too. At BMI you receive care from your specialist throughout.
How do I choose a surgeon?
BMI has 61 hospitals at which cosmetic procedures are performed. On our website you can search for a consultant by location or by procedure. You can then read a profile about those surgeons who match your search requirements. Remember, every surgeon working at BMI is a Consultant and on the Specialist Register.
How much will it cost?
Your price, as much as your surgery, is individual to you - however an outline of the price of any procedure, at any of our 61 hospitals, can be given to you if you call our Enquiry Centre on 0800 015 2217. Once you see your consultant they will be able to advise you about what's right for you and give you more specific details which are relevant to you and your needs.
Are there any finance options?
Many people use the BMI Card to help them spread the cost of cosmetic surgery. Click here for more details.
I've seen lots of companies offering cosmetic surgery. Do they all have their own hospitals?
No, some of these will simply be brokers and not healthcare providers. Others do not have any hospitals of their own, and more still only have one or two clinics which means you may have to travel many miles for your surgery. It may also mean you won't meet the surgeon who will perform your surgery before actually having it and won't be able to talk through all your questions and concerns.
How will I know what to expect after my surgery?
Your Consultant will talk through the implications of the surgery you are interested in, the recovery period, how much time off from work you may need and any follow up care you will need. If you have any questions or concerns about your surgery or the procedure you are interested in - ask your consultant at your consultation. And, if something occurs to you after your consultation, there's plenty of options for you to get in touch once again and get the information you need.
Once I go home after surgery, if I need help or advice who can I call?
Call the hospital immediately. Our hospitals have clinical teams on duty every day of the week and every hour of the day. And they are there for just this type of follow up care.
I've seen much cheaper surgery deals available overseas. Should I be tempted?

Be careful! The standards of surgery differ widely and there may be serious difficulties in getting follow up care and immediate attention should anything go wrong. It is very difficult to measure the qualifications and abilities of overseas providers an it's unlikely you'll be able to have care from the same surgeon from beginning to end.
Your 6 step journey with BMI Healthcare
1. Initial consultation
This is a chance for you to ask any questions you might have with a consultant surgeon. They will be your surgeon throughout your journey if you proceed, so it's important you feel comfortable with them. You can always choose to see a different surgeon before making any decisions if you are not 100% comfortable. We can advise you of the costs of consultations with any of our surgeons beforehand.
2. Booking your surgery
If you have decided to go ahead with your surgery, the next step is to book a date that's convenient for you by calling your chosen BMI hospital. If necessary, we'll invite you in for any pre-admission tests.
3. Settling into your private room
We will then send you an information pack with everything you'll need to know prior to your admission. Once you arrive, you'll be shown to your private room where a qualified team will be on hand to look after you.
4. Consultant visit and surgery
Before surgery you'll have the chance to see your consultant and anaesthetist for a final assessment. This gives you another chance to ask any other questions you might have.
5. Discharge
After your surgery you'll be given full details of what you should and shouldn't do in the following days and weeks, as well as any information or prescriptions for pain management should that be necessary. It's also reassuring to know you will be provided with details of how you can get in touch with your chosen BMI hospital 24/7 and if needed speak to a doctor on call.
6. Your aftercare
You will usually have at least one follow-up consultation included in your package price. During your initial consultation or any subsequent consultations your surgeon will agree with you what aftercare is suitable dependant on your personal needs.
Your follow-up appointment is an opportunity for you to discuss your results with your consultant and ensure that everything is healing well. The nursing team at the hospital are also on hand to remove any dressings, stitches or plaster and they'll arrange dates and other details with you before you are discharged.
