Personal Profile

Mr Mike Lemon is a consultant orthopaedic hip and knee specialist with extensive experience treating the complete range of knee injuries through to early and advanced knee and hip arthritis. He has a particular interest in tissue and bone preserving treatments to enable natural joint function.

Mike performs complex sports injury meniscal repairs and is proficient in tendon-preserving ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) techniques, partial joint replacement/resurfacing and, where applicable, can offer fully bespoke computer-aided design joint replacements.

Mr Lemon is proficient in all the latest technical advances in knee sports injury repair, and regional colleagues often refer cases which require complex reconstruction to him. He receives referrals from knee specialists for the assessment of all types of partial knee replacement.

Mike’s hip practice is focused entirely on total hip replacement, with a particular interest in intra-operative techniques to preserve hip biomechanics.

Training and Appointment

Mike studied medicine at Oxford University and graduated in 1995 before going on his Orthopaedic Specialist Registrar Training on the South West London rotation between 2001 and 2006. His surgical training started in Guy’s and St. Thomas’ hospitals, followed by an invaluable post in a major trauma centre in Cape Town, South Africa.

He received specialist training through two UK specialist knee and hip surgery fellowships where he further developed his skills, working with internationally renowned specialists, in unicompartmental, total/revision knee replacement, and sports knee surgery.

Mike then spent a year at South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC), one of the busiest knee and hip centres in Europe, learning advanced hip replacement techniques, including multiple surgical training visits to Paris.

Mike spent time at the world-renowned clinical institute, John’s Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA, where he carried out biomechanics research in lower limb injury treatments. He has published numerous academic and clinical papers on knee and hip surgery in the world’s leading orthopaedic journals, and has lectured internationally as invited overseas faculty on tissue preserving knee surgery.

Current Practice

In 2020 Mike was appointed as the Orthopaedic Clinical Lead at Royal Surrey Foundation Trust and is privileged to work with his colleagues there to support its very high-quality orthopaedic service.  Mr Lemon took up his Consultant post at the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford in 2009.

He offers regular clinics to private patients at Mount Alvernia Hospital.
