Vascular surgery

Vascular surgery diagnoses and treats arterial, venous and lymphatic diseases.

According to the NHS, cardiovascular disease affects around seven million people in the UK. They can often be caused by the build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries, but other factors can contribute too. Conditions that fall under the category of vascular disease include varicose veins, Raynaud’s, aneurysms, carotid disease and heart failure. The effects of such diseases can be serious, so it is important to identify and treat these issues as early as possible. Many vascular conditions can be treated without surgery, radiology, or other invasive procedures.

Our expert vascular surgeons at BMI Healthcare hospitals will advise which option is best for you. At BMI Healthcare, we are proud to facilitate Consultant vascular surgeons who can help test, diagnose, and treat or manage your vascular condition in order to help improve your quality of life.

It’s important to decide on the right treatment and surgery for your condition so you can get back to your normal self as soon as possible. The vascular surgery departments at BMI Healthcare offer treatment for a wide range of vascular diseases and conditions, including:

Varicose veins;
Congestive heart failure;
Aneurysms;
Raynaud’s;
Peripheral vascular disease;
Diabetic foot disease;
Vascular malformations;
Carotid disease;
Venous disease;
Leg ulcers;
Lymphoedema and
Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

The type of vascular surgery you will receive will depend on your diagnosis. Your Consultant will assess your condition and give you their specialist opinion on which type of surgery is best for your needs.

Vascular surgery with BMI Healthcare will be carried out by our multidisciplinary team, comprising dedicated vascular Consultants, nurses and more.

Our team will strive to reduce your symptoms through effective treatment and help you to recover after your surgery.

Femoro-popliteal bypass surgery

Femoral-popliteal bypass surgery or a “fem pop bypass” is surgery that reverts the hardening of arteries. This happens when abnormal fatty material (called atheroma) coats the inside of the artery.

When the arteries to your legs are affected, you will experience pain in the back of your legs. If the fem pop bypass operation is successful, you should be able to walk with less pain. Surgery should improve the blood supply to your legs and prevent you from getting ulcers or gangrene.

Varicose veins treatment

Varicose veins are enlarged and twisted veins in your leg. Sometimes, weaknesses in the walls of the superficial veins cause them to enlarge. The result is a build-up of pressure in the veins, which bulge out as varicose veins.

Surgery should help prevent the symptoms and complications that varicose veins cause. The operation is usually performed under a general anaesthetic, but a local anaesthetic can be used.  The operation usually takes 20 minutes to three hours.

Carotid endarterectomy

Carotid endarterectomy is an operation performed on narrowed carotid arteries to help reduce the risk of stroke. These arteries lie in the neck and are an important blood supply to your brain.

As you age, plaque can build up in the walls of your arteries causing them to narrow. This process is called atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. If enough plaque builds up, then blood flow through your cartoid arteries can be reduced and the smooth inner lining of the arteries can be damaged.

During a carotid endarterectomy, your surgeon will make an incision on one side of your neck to expose the narrowed carotid artery and will remove the inner lining of the diseased section of your artery containing the plaque.
