What is gastroenterology?
Gastroenterology looks at the diseases and disorders of the digestive system. Gastroenterologists study the physiology of the gastrointestinal organs including how food is moving through the stomach and intestine, how nutrients are being digested and absorbed, how the waste is removed and the normal function of the liver.
This field regularly uses endoscopy procedures to examine the digestive tract as well as CT and Ultra sound scans. On Consultation with your consultant, they will advise you what procedures if any would be necessary.
When you should see a gastroenterologist?
If you are suffering from any gastrointestinal problem, your GP will be the first point of contact and will refer you to a specialist if needed. Some of the most common symptoms for gastrointestinal disorders are:
- Change of bowel habit
- Rectal bleeding
- Loss of appetite and weight
- Abdominal pain and bloating
- Oesophageal pain
- Excessive gas or belching
There are many common disorders of the upper and lower digestive tract, and it is always important to speak with your GP in the first instance. Some of these disorders include:
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
- Inflammatory Bowel disease (IBD)
