Personal Profile

Dr Padfield is a Consultant Cardiologist with specialist expertise in heart rhythm disorders such as atrial fibrillation and other conditions that cause fast or slow heart rates. He has a genuine interest and a passion for Cardiology, and an objective to help people with Cardiovascular problems and provide for them the best possible care.

He graduated from Dundee University with Bachelor degrees in Medicine and Medical Psychology, and has a PhD in Cardiovascular Science from the University of Edinburgh. Following his training in general Cardiology in the Grampian region, he completed an intensive 2-year Fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology specialising in catheter ablation procedures and cardiac devices therapy at the University of British Columbia in Canada. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and is fully accredited with the European Heart Rhythm Association in both invasive electrophysiology (ablation procedures) and device therapy (pacemakers, resynchronisation therapy and defibrillators).

Dr Padfield is appointed at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital where he provides care for patients with heart rhythm disorders in the west of Scotland, and additionally for more complicated problems, the whole of Scotland. He has extensive experience in catheter ablation of arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation. He also implants cardiac devices (implantable heart rhythm monitors, pacemakers, ‘resynchronisation’ pacemakers for heart failure, and internal defibrillators) and provides the device removal service for the West of Scotland. He also provides arrhythmia and general Cardiology clinics, and device implantation at Forth Valley Royal Hospital.

Dr Padfield has a wide breadth of experience in general cardiology and will provide expertise in the assessment and management of chest pain and angina, palpitations, breathlessness, high blood pressure, valvular heart disease, and heart failure. 

Dr Padfield has an active research interest and has published widely. In 2018 he was awarded the Heart Rhythm Society outstanding publication award in in the area of clinical research. He also enjoys teaching in Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology.
